I am a postdoc from Belgium who visited the University of Oxford for one month and stayed at Alan and Guy's lovely house during this period. One can immediately tell how much Alan and Guy love their house - it is beautiful, cozy, stylish, bright, organized, and very well catered for. I was given a clean, bright room on the top floor, overlooking their beautiful British backyard garden. It was my favorite room, although each room in the house has a unique theme. There is a bathroom on each floor. The few other short-term tenants I met there are also really lovely, respectful, and tidy people. It's all nice and quiet at night. I've had the best sleep in this house and always wake up energized.
From their house, one can walk, rent a scooter, or take the bus to the center. The bus stop is just right outside their house. I often prefer to take a 30-minute walk to my office (close to the Life and Mind building) while enjoying the Oxford vibe. The scenery is so beautiful that it doesn't feel like a long walk at all.
Alan and Guy are a really kind and caring couple. They welcomed me in, showed me around, were always there to help with any issue, and always made sure I felt comfortable in shared spaces. They would take extra effort to make sure the people living there feel at home. I'm naturally an introvert, so I don't talk a lot. But during my time there, I felt very comfortable chatting with Alan and Guy about anything. They also took me to a theatrical performance at the Oxford Playhouse and to a famous, hidden pub, both of which were a super cool way to explore local culture!
If you are looking to experience living with a British family, learn more about the hidden cool stuff in Oxford that only locals know about, or simply enjoy a comfortable, beautiful stay during your trip, their home would definitely make a great base!
Overall, it was an absolutely charming British experience, and I'm really glad I made new friends along the way!
